The research project tackles issues of representation, documentation and authentication of musical performance in biographical fiction films about pop/rock musicians, conventionally labelled ‘pop/rock biopics’. The project takes on a musicological approach to performance history and analysis, and combines it with film and media theory, specifically bridging the theoretical reflections on the cinematic genres of the musical biopic, the concert film and the rock documentary (aka ‘rockumentary’) in order to highlight their relevance for music studies.
The lecture will cross-examine the strategies chosen by different biopics to relate to historical performances by especially taking track of the processes of re-appropriation, restaging and rendering both on a technical and aesthetical level and by asking questions as to how the performance was actually and technologically constructed, which perspective is sought by the filmmaker, how the encapsulation of the performance in the film plot affects its musical meaning, and how the visual and sonic choices affect the audio-visual experience of the performance.
