REPERTORIUM investigates how artificial intelligence can be applied to the digitisation of ancient and classical manuscripts, combining the preservation of Europe’s musical heritage with state-of-the-art optical music recognition (OMR) technologies. The project has created a full digital archive of the Solesmes collection - over 100,000 sacred chants - whose images provide the training material for OMR systems. This large corpus is central to developing reliable tools able to “read” and process medieval notations, which differ significantly from modern scores.

Within REPERTORIUM, the Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales, the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Jaén, as well as the University of Alicante are cooperating to produce data (transcription), develop algorithms (recognition), and publish the results (e.g. through the Cantus Index). REPERTORIUM is funded by the European Union through a Horizon Research and Innovation grant.
