SUMMARY:Vortrag Sektion Bern: Stravinsky in South Africa: Music, Politics and Apartheid
DESCRIPTION:Luis Velasco-Pufleau (Bern) \n\nIgor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was
in South Africa in May and June 1962 to conduct his music in a series of c
oncerts with the South African Broadcasting Orchestra in Johannesburg, Pret
oria and Cape Town. Stravinsky's decision to conduct in South Africa was co
ntroversial, since the South African government was violently repressing de
monstrations and enforcing strict apartheid policies of racial discriminati
on. However, the concert series also included a concert for black South Afr
icans in Kwa Thema, a township near Johannesburg. What was Stravinsky's mot
ivation in first asking for a mixed audience concert? How did the South Afr
ican Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) negotiate Stravinsky's request? What w
as the political significance of the Kwa Thema concert for black South Afri
cans who attended it? This lecture addresses these questions. It is based o
n extensive research at the Igor Stravinsky Collection of the Paul Sacher S
tiftung and sheds new light on the role of black and Indian South African c
ultural organisations in the struggle against racial segregation and aparth
 eid. \n\nhttps://unibe-ch.zoom.us/j/63140587186?pwd=b3FzTWswKzBqcEt0ZUYzdDd
