SUMMARY:Vortrag Sektion Bern: Bohuslav Martinů: Being a Czech composer in the International Space
DESCRIPTION:Jiří Kopecký (Olomouc)\n\nBohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) was born
in Polička, a small town on the border between Bohemia and Moravia, and wa
s brought up as a conscious Czech. His compositional beginnings were linked
to distinctive personalities of Czech music (Bedřich Smetana – Antonín Dvo
řák – Leoš Janáček – Josef Suk), but he soon decided to respond to music th
at had already greatly interested him before World War I and especially in
the interwar period (Claude Debussy – Igor Stravinsky). In the 1930s, he wa
s able to sovereignly combine his international outlook with his own roots.
The introverted composer paid particular attention to the quality of his s
cores and believed in the artist‘s responsibility to the culture in which h
e lived. Martinů travelled through many countries (France – USA – Switzerla
nd) and always managed to establish himself without losing his connection t
 o the Czech musical tradition.\n\nhttps://unibe-ch.zoom.us/j/62367557208?pw
