SUMMARY:Sonic Rituals Ottoman, Habsburg & Burgundian Festivities (15th – 17th Centuries) From an Intermedial Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Online workshop\n\nSonic Rituals Ottoman, Habsburg & Burgundian
  Festivities (15th – 17th Centuries) From an Intermedial Perspective\n\nSou
nds are an essential medium of representation of power. Especially at festi
ve events they were effectively used in the form of music, noises and perfo
rmative speech acts. However, this was not done in isolation from other med
ia. Rule was to be experienced as all-encompassing, in order to amaze and a
we the court, the subjects as well as competing and “friendly” courts, and
to present the ruler’s government, person and environment as ideal instance
s of power. The workshop “Sonic Rituals: Ottoman and Habsburg-Burgundian Fe
stivities from the 15th to the 17th Centuries from an Intermedial Perspecti
ve”, which will be organized on 4th and 5th September by the SNF project “T
he Sound of Power: Sounding as Intermedial Category of 15th to 17th Century
Court Festivity Rituals in an Intercultural Perspective” (University Bern)
together with the Orient-Institute Istanbul, will focus specifically on th
e intermedial interplay of power and sound in rituals in the context of the
Ottoman Sultans and the courts of Habsburg-Burgundy. Lecturers from Istanb
ul, Ankara, Bern, Dijon, Vienna and Boston will approach the topic from dif
ferent disciplinary and time perspectives. The workshop is organized as a v
ideo conference and thus offers the possibility to get into conversation wi
th each other despite different locations. Interested persons who would lik
e to join the workshop as listeners and discussants are welcome. To attend
this online workshop, prior registration is necessary: please send an email
